The Classics

July 29, 2009

Playing new games is fun, so is creating them.

It’s worth taking some time out now and again to go back and have a look over your classic games. Break out something you’ve not played in a while, whether it be chess, Go, Risk or Settlers and play a couple of games.

Look with fresh eyes upon these games, and try and find why they are classics. Look at the elegant rules, the simple yet deep interactions, the beautiful pieces, whatever the game has that makes it great.

Find the little niggles that aren’t quite right, clunky rules, pointless complexity or cheap production values.

Take the good with you into your new work, and make sure you don’t repeat any of the mistakes you’ve identified.
